Dr. Angela Janis is the Co-Director of Mental Health Services and the Director of Psychiatric Services for the UW Health Services. In addition to practicing general psychiatry, Dr. Janis specializes in women’s mental health, psychiatric medications during pregnancy, bariatric surgery, and marijuana use, which she says is noticeable in the student population. She says the biggest challenge for students she counsels about marijuana use is to understand the science about marijuana use versus the narrative that it’s safe to use. Her role is as an educator.
Studies show that marijuana use in an academic setting can lead to academic problems including lower grades, longer time to graduation, and an increased risk of withdrawing from school. It can also increase the risk of psychosis if one starts early enough. If one has a family history, you risk serious, long-term problems.
Dr. Janis will discuss the use of medical marijuana.
